Test #1531 India vs Australia at Mumbai. Report by Sanjiban Choudhury.

Australia v/s India 2000/01

It was all Hayden and Gilchrist in this match as they hoisted Australia to a nerve wrecking 379, which was enough to overpower the Indians, as they crumbled to 180 in the second innings. Australia chased an easy target of just 55 and scored 57 in just 8.4 overs but losing 3 wickets .

The Mumbai pitch was a fairly a good batting pitch and the Indians proved that by scoring a sensible 253. S.S.Das & S.R.Tendulkar batted very well scoring 52 & 57 respectively but both of them fell out to Fleming and Gillespie who dominated the Australian bowling. Both of them took 4 wickets each and demolished the other Indian batsmen. McGrath also added in taking two wickets. However Warne didn't seem to get much out of the wicket.

Australia was in an aggressive frame of mind specially Adam Gilchrist. He and Matt Hayden took Australia to 379. They had a partnership of 79 and really tortured the Indian bowlers. The most outstanding among the Indian bowlers was Srinath who took 6 wickets for 91 runs. The other bowlers also helped him but I wasn't enough to keep the kangaroos from getting a 126 lead.

Losing all hopes of winning India crumbled to 180. Once again the Aussie bowlers exterminated the tigers, McGrath and Gillespie leading the kill. Only the lefthanders Ramesh and Ganguly put up a fight.

Australia had an easy target of just 55, which they managed to overcome with an awesome runrate of 6.5. But the tigers didn t give up as they managed to snatch 3 wickets before the match was taken out of their grasp.

So a purely sensational test came to an end, Australia winning it by 7 wickets, the kangaroo surviving and strike one for the tiger.
