Test #1539 India vs Australia at Chennai. Report by Vijay24.

What an excellent test match this really was! The Indian Spectators really got there rupees worth throughout the whole of the five days this test match was running!

The weather conditions on the first day were typical Indian Conditions! Hot, Sunny, a nice gentle breeze with only a slight breeze! What a perfect start!

Day 1

Australia won the toss and decided to bat on this beautiful batting strip. From this end on, a massive flow of runs started! A 4 off the first ball of the match got Australia off to a positive start, and the runs continued! A beautiful opening stand of 110 saw Australia in a commanding position. A wicket finally fell for India in the 28.2 over, where Slater was out LBW to Harbhajan Singh for 53. India got a well-needed breakthrough, and just 6 runs after saw another important wicket for the Indians, where Hayden was out for 55 and was bowled by Zaheer Khan! India finally was coming back! The Indians then got another vital breakthrough for just 1 run afterwards! Mark Waugh was out for a duck! Dighe (WK) caught him and Harbhajan Singh got another wicket! At this stage, the Aussies were 117-3. But then, it was absolute trouble for India! A beautiful 4th Wicket Partnership between Langer and Steve Waugh (worth 217 runs!) saw the Aussies through to a commanding position at 334-4 when Steve Waugh went to another Harbhajan wicket. An excellent innings here! Next batsmen were Ricky Ponting who lasted 36 runs, before falling to a Bahutule wicket caught by Dravid for 22 runs. Next batsmen was Adam Gilchrist who went out for a mere 17 caught by Dighe, off the bowling of Zaheer Khan. India making a vital breakthrough just before Stumps! With another 5 overs left till the end of day 1, it would help India if they got another wicket! And they did! Shane Warne fell for 14 runs, again caught by Dighe and off the bowling of Zaheer Khan! This saw the Aussies 414-7 at Stumps!

Day 2

Day 2 started well once again for the Aussies! A vital partnership worth 53 runs, which involved Langer and Gillespie, was a perfect start! Bahutule then bowled out Gillespie for 11. Next batsmen was Miller was only made 17 before being bowled out to Harbhajan Singh. This was the end of the Australian Innings, making 496! Not a memorable bowling performance for the Indians, but it was mainly down to the bowling of Harbhajan Singh, with figures of 5-125!

India only had 3 overs to bat before lunch! A wicket for the Aussies here would really have India on the back foot. Opening batsmen were Das and Ramesh. Luckily for India, they survived these 3 nervy overs to go into lunch at 6-0.

An early wicket for the Indians made matters worse! Ramesh falling for a mere 13 off the bowling of Gillespie was the tragedy! Next batsman was Laxman who caused more problems for India, getting out for 3, with Slater taking the catch, off the bowling of Miller. At 47-2, India were looking for something special off the best batsman in the world, Mr Satchin Tendulkar! But this proved an unlikely task, as he fell to the one of the worlds greatest spinners, Shane Warne for only 5! India were in deep trouble at 62-3! Next batsmen was Ganguly who batted superbly! A partnership worth 54 between Das and Ganguly proved worthy, until Das fell off the bowling of Miller for 69. India were again in trouble at 117-4!

Tea finally came on Day 2, and boy did it come for the Indians! Ganguly and Dravid piled on the runs, each making notable scores! Ganguly and Dravid batted well, and seeing out the last session on a positive note!

Day 3

Ganguly and Dravid continued piling on the runs, and batted out the first session of the day. Rain saw an early lunch, and soon after lunch, Ganguly fell for 152 off the bowling of McGrath (bowled). This saw India at 404-5, and getting closer to Australia’s 496. Tea then came for the players, and just 1 over after tea, Dravid fell LBW to Warne for 154. This was a vital breakthrough for the Aussies. It was then down to Dighe and Bahutule to get India closer to the Australians 1st Innings score. But it did not last very long! Bahutule got out for 9 and the score was

435-7! Trouble stared for the Indians as Zaheer Khan fell just 3 balls after, Caught by Warne off the bowling of Miller! The score was now 435-8 as Harbhajan Singh came out, but did not last long! 5 balls was all he could cope with, as he got out, Caught and Bowled to Miller for a duck! 439-9 and Indians were once again in trouble. Wicketkeeper Dighe got out for a vital 36 and the Indians closed there 1st innings on 468-10, a lead of 28.

Colin Miller the pick of the Australian Bowlers, 6-128

The Australian 2nd Innings started off quite bad, Slater falling for just 8, Caught by Zaheer Khan off the bowling of Bahatule. 28-1 at this stage, with only 2 overs left in the day, night watchman Miller came out and survived these 2 overs comfortably.

Day 4

Perfect start for the Indians as Miller fell in the first over of the day for 4, stumped Dighe, bowled Bahatule. This then bought the hero of the first innings, Justin Langer out. Hayden then fell 5 overs after, for just 21 runs, and another victim of the Aussies innings being stumped out, the bowler Bahutule. 49-3, and the Indians with a chance of coming back! Mark Waugh was next, and after only getting a duck in the first innings, wanted to make a comeback here. And boy did he! Making an excellent 74, and batting with Langer bought the Aussie score up to 227-4. Mark Waugh was out, caught by Ganguly off the bowling of Zaheer Khan. Next batsmen was Steve Waugh, who batted well. Langer and S.Waugh batted for a long time, playing there shots! But at 254-4, Langer fell for 112 caught by Ramesh, bowler was Harbhajan Singh. The score was now 302-5, as Ponting came out, and the declaration must be in Steve Waughs mind at this stage. Ponting made a quickfire 20 off 29 balls before he fell LBW to Harbhajan Singh. Score now was 354-6, with Gilchrist coming in to bat. Tea then came for the players, and the Aussies must be thinking of a decleration at some point in this session. India took the new ball, and with 2 overs with it, getting Gilchrist, caught Dravid off the bowling of Bahatule. Shane Warne then came out, made a rushed 10 before Steve Waugh, who made 64 not out, declared the innings on 368-7. India needs 397 runs to win!

5 overs into the 2nd innings saw problems once again for India, Ramesh out for 12 runs, Caught by Ponting, bowled by Gillespie! 22-1, and India were hoping for some runs! This did not last long, as Laxman fell 2 overs after the 1st wicket, making a sad 7, caught by Gilchrist off the bowling of Gillespie. India struggling at 34-2. Tendulkar and Das batted out the last few overs of Day 4 successfully!

Day 5

After 40 minutes of rain, India maybe is seeing a hope at a draw because of this rain.. This did not work though, and as the players came back onto the field, 4 overs into the 1st session saw another Indian wicket, Das falling for 37, LBW to Gillespie. As Ganguly came out, it would need something special for these 2 to get an Indian win! A bowling change from Waugh saw Colin Miller come onto bowl, and got the vital wicket of Tendulkar, caught Gilchrist, bowled by Miller for 35. Australia smells a victory! As players went into lunch, Ganguly and Dravid, the heroes of the first innings, did not last well. Dravid fell for just 10 runs, caught by M.Waugh off the bowling of McGrath. At 152-6, India were going to lose badly. As soon as Ganguly fell for just 43, India were smelling a loss! The last 3 indian wickets fell in a space of 12 runs as Australia won the test match!

AUSTRALIA WON BY 222 RUNS!
