Australia v England, Brisbane Australia won the toss on a good batting pitch and Mark Taylor elected to bat. England got off to a strong start as Allan Mullally removed Michael Slater with the score on 25. But then Mark Taylor and Justin Langer put on a second wicket stand of 269 to take the score to 294 when Allan Mullally took a couple of quick wickets. The Australians were soon reduced to 354/6. Then Ricky Ponting hit a good 49 to leave Australia with a first innings score of 429 all out. The leading bowler was Darren Gough who gave nothing away and took 5 wickets for 87 runs. It was never going to be easy for England but they really messed it up this time. Not one of the Englishmen got past 50. Alec Stewart was the highest scorer with 33 runs. It took the Australians just 57 overs to bowl England out and enforce the follow on. All the bowlers contributed to the England disaster but the tidiest of them all was Michael Kasprowicz who will be hoping to keep his test place ahead of Jason Gillespie. In the end England were all out for 148 runs. England made another awful start and this time they were bowled out for a very poor 122 from just 50.4 overs. Only Mark Ramprakash got close to fifty with 36 runs. The leading wicket taker was Stuart MacGill who took 4 wickets. Australia won the match by an innings and 129 runs. The man of the match was Mark Taylor whose 152 helped the Aussies to get a massive first innings score. England have got a lot to work on and it will be a very boring Ashes series unless they get their act together. |
