Australia v England (3rd Test) The third Ashes test is in Adelaide. The pitch looks fairly flat but it is overcast which could give the bowlers a bit of assistance. Alec Stewart one the toss and elected to field first. England would have been a bit disappointed when Australia finished their innings on 358. Mark Taylor (77) and Justin Langer (65) were the leading scorers for the Aussies. Darren Gough took 4/97 and Peter Such ended with figures of 3/93. England's batting once again collapsed but the final score of 285 all-out was respectable. Mark Butcher hit a superb century and Surrey teammate Alec Stewart got 85. The top bowlers were Damien Fleming 4/65 and Glenn McGrath 3/58. After the first innings Australia's lead was 73 runs. Australia declared at 263/9 with Mark Waugh and Ian Healy the leading scorers. Dean Headley took 2/46 and Allan Mullally took 2/50. England were set a target of 337 runs to win which was almost impossible given the conditions. England were all out for 220. Mark Ramprakash finished 2 runs short of a century and Alec Stewart hit 59. Stuart MacGill took 5/78 and Miller took 3/56. That meant that Australia won the game by 116 runs to clinch the Ashes once again. The man of the match was Alec Stewart who batted well in both innings. |
