Brian Lara Cricket Logo

Brian Lara Cricket by Codemasters is based upon the hugely succesful Brian Lara MegaDrive games. The Australian/NZ release is called Shane Warne Cricket '99. This later version of Brian Lara Cricket should not be confused with the much older Brian Lara Cricket by Audiogenic which was a special budget release of Graham Gooch World Class Cricket that was only available from the Game stores in the UK.

If you have any news about Brian Lara Cricket, seen it previewed/reviewed in a magazine/web site please send me details (including magazine/web site and score if appropriate).

Both the PC and Playstation versions have now been released in the UK. A Patch has been released for the PC version.

** IMPORTANT NOTE ** The full version of Brian Lara Cricket will not work under Windows XP even though the demo works!

A few weeks ago I emailed the producer of Brian Lara Cricket about the possibility of a sequel and have not received any response so I fear the worse. I did speak to Codemasters at ECTS (European Computer Trade Show) last year and was told then they had no plans for a sequel. This to me is a pity as Brian Lara Cricket was much better (in my opinion) than its major competitor EA Sports Cricket World Cup plus it seemed to do well comercially by all reports I have heard.

Tim Bortoli is planning making a total conversion of BLC/SWC 99. It switches the international teams for the Australian domestic teams. It goes on the colours they wear (e.g. Australia becomes the WA warriors, Pakistan becomes Tasmania, Sri Lanka become NSW Blues etc.) Tim would like people with any questions or if they are interested in the Total conversion to email him. Tim also needs to know if there is a way to change the team names (like switch Australia for WA).

I have now installed the patch for Brian Lara Cricket. Two things I like that have been added are the FILTERED is now a setting and the Helmet Cam follows the pitch of the ball so is now useable. For more details of what the patch fixes/updates see the readme file.

Wednesday, 5 May 1999

Spotted in a message on Caught Behind forum that patches for Both Brian Lara Cricket and Shane Warne Cricket are now available. There is no mention on the official Brian Lara site and it is only mentioned on the Tech Support page but not the Downloads page even though that also lists patches. The patch includes a wides and fielding restrictions update, plus HelmetCam enhancement. More news hopefully tomorrow when I have had a chance to try out the patch.

Updated Downloads page - added links to Brian Lara Cricket and Shane Warne Cricket 99 patches.

Wednesday, 28 April 1999

Monday, 19 April 1999

Having received no reply from Jeremy Wellard for the email I sent on 7 April I sent another today and got an automated response saying it had been re-directed to Customer Support. This I consider very unprofessional as I requested a personal response.

I have now received the 2nd beta version of SWEd (Shane Warne Editor). NB- The editor will work with both Shane Warnes Cricket 99 and Brian Lara Cricket. Chau is hoping to release the final version in 1-2 weeks time. There are still a few bugs to sort out but it will offer more than the Codemasters editor with the ability to create your own classic matches.

Updated Cheats page - added SETMOUSE cheat.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from Chris Gin (suggestions for keyboard freezes and sound problems), Jon Rothrock (LBW issues and bug) and Glen Hanson (Editor).

Updated Hints 'n' Tips page - added short batting hints from Asad Ilyas & Wedge and short bowling hints from Craig Moore & Simon.

Updated Reviews page - added link to review by Brian Lara Cricket Online.

Updated Wish List page - added bugs sent in by James Ashworth.

Thursday, 15 April 1999

The Brian Lara Cricket web site has got on it a statistical editor for Brian Lara Cricket. I reckon this site is actually run by someone within the development team of the game as it uses game graphics and gets all the downloads first. The editor has obviously been developed by Codemasters as it actually integrates in to the game. That said it is not being supported by Codemasters and is used at your own risk. Follow the instructions carefully and back up files first. The editor is designed to only update statistics for players and only the 9 Test playing countries can be altered. Whilst you can rename players the commentary still treats them as the old player. Note this is not the SWEd editor which is still in beta testing. Thanks to Denny Mathew for mentioning the editor in the forum and thus bringing it to my attention.

Updated Downloads page - added Brian Lara Cricket Statistical Editor.

Tuesday, 13 April 1999

Spoke to the Codemasters technical support today and they claimed that Q & A is currently testing a patch for Brian Lara Cricket. It is reckoned to be ready for release in the next 2 weeks. No mention of what the patch is supposed to fix but I guess No-Balls and Wides will be implemented and the crash bugs removed as a minimum. If anyone else has heard any more news or hears conflicting reports from Codemasters technical support please let me know.

Updated Cheats page - removed a cheat and noted problem with entering cheats.

Updated Downloads page - added stunning Windows background created by Brian Lara Premier.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from Andrew Milham (Bug, Comments and Requests), Craig Giofdano (Strange fielding bug), Ben Faigen (possible solution to 3Dfx crashes) and Mr Anon.

Updated Hints 'n' Tips page - added short batting hint from Rob.

Updated Wish List page.

Sunday, 11 April 1999

I have now got my beta version of the SWEd (Shane Warne Editor) working. You need to have the full 480Mb installation of the game for the editor to work. Very easy to change player details and does have an excellent Wizard for creating classic matches.

On Wednesday, 7 April I emailed Jeremy Wellard the producer of Brian Lara Cricket with some of the problems I and others have had with the game. Still have had no reply. Tempted to list his email address here so you can all email him any problems and then maybe Codemasters will admit them and release a patch. Currently their support for the game is a joke.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from Kush Desai, Brent Williamson (PC crashes), Ben Woodcock (explaination of bug) and Ian Mond (mini review and gripes).

Talking of links has anyone been able to access the official Brian Lara site recently? When I last tried I got an error whilst it was loading and this has also been reported to me by other people.

Wednesday, 7 April 1999

I have received a beta version of the SWEd (Shane Warne Editor). Unfortunately it crashes on my system but other testers seem to be going okay. The great news is that not only can you edit all the player averages, looks, etc but it looks like you can create your own classic matches. I will keep you posted on further news. Please don't ask for a copy of the beta version as all such requests will be politely ignored. When the editor is ready for release you will be able to download it from here. Going on the experience of the ICEd beta phase I would predict this to be 2 weeks to a month.

Updated Cheats page - added lots of cheats (FILTERED cheat should have been default setting for 3Dfx).

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from W Haak (re non Intel chips), Andrew Gregory (Short review) and Chris Cirami (more on 3Dfx crashes).

Updated Hints 'n' Tips page - added short batting hints from Salman Siddiqui and Andrew plus short bowling hint from RagmaN.

Updated Wish List page.

Sunday, 28 March 1999

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from Ben (more crashing and irritating bugs).

Updated Reviews page - added link to reviews by Game Online and IT Reviews.

Saturday, 27 March 1999

This is the Screenshot I was sent by the author of the ICC editor ICEd :-)

Updated Cheats page - added lots of cheats.

Friday, 26 March 1999

The suggestion sent in by Brett Roscoe for fixing 3Dfx crashes has now worked for several people. If you have problems with Brian Lara Cricket crashing with a 3Dfx error read his Feedback sent on 23 March 1999.

I have been sent a very interesting screenshot by the author of the ICC editor ICEd :-)

Updated Cheats page - added lots of PC cheats.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback/mini reviews from Matt Lane (thoughts on helmet cam).

Updated Hints 'n' Tips page - added hints from Nick Price for playing Test level.

Tuesday, 23 March 1999

I finally received my copy of Brian Lara Cricket from Special Reserve today (only 4 days late!). I have not yet decided what to do with it. I might just sell it (it is still shrink wrapped) for £23 or might dream up a competition. Will have a think about it. Resent having to pay for the game twice when I feel Codemasters should have sent out a review copy. A sports web site not yet opened managed to get a review copy of TOCA2!

Updated Cheats page - added first PC cheat (same as a Playstation one) plus changed form for submitting cheats.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback/mini reviews from Paul Robson (Codemasters support), Paul Clarke (more details on crashes), Chris Gin (comparisons to Playstation version), Ben Woodcock (More crashes but praise for Codemasters support?!) and Brett Roscoe (suggestion to help 3Dfx crashes).

Updated Hints 'n' Tips page - added quick bowling hint by Gau Sura plus changed form for submitting Hints 'n' Tips.

Sunday, 21 March 1999

Updated Feedback page - added feedback/mini reviews from Martin James, Gau Sura, Krishna Raghavan, Paul Clarke (more on full release crashing) and Ben (crashes on AMD K6-2).

I should point out that at no time did Codemasters actually say that they did not consider CricketGames.com important enough. They do read the Wish List and take note of it. I did email them several times requesting a review copy and all requests were simply ignored and no replies were ever sent so read in to that what you like. Nearly all other email sent regarding Brian Lara Cricket was answered.

I did buy my own copy of Brian Lara Cricket as I have got fed up waiting for the one sent by Special Reserve. I ordered it back in January. They even debited the card back then which I consider very bad practice especially as the price subsequently came down but not for me (pitiful excuse about having to buy the game there and then - how when it had not been released!). I certainly will not be using their services again.

I have noticed that the SUNSHINE cheat works for the PC version. Not tried any of the other cheats to see if they work.

Friday, 19 March 1999

Brian Lara Cricket is released today. Mine is on order and will mean a 'We tried to deliver a parcel note' tonight as I will be at work. I will have to pick it up tomorrow (ggrrrr!!) and will write a review of it over the weekend. Please send me your own reviews of the game. I am a little disappointed that Codemasters did not send me a 'review' copy unlike some gaming web sites (not to save money but it means they do not consider this site important enough).

Updated Reviews page - added first reviews of Brian Lara Cricket from Sridhar Ramaswamy and Amit Gogwekar.

Updated Feedback page - added feedback from Matt Lane questioning graphical qualities of PC version and Paul Clarke regarding crashes with the full release.

Tuesday, 16 March 1999

Updated Reviews page - added review by Hyper>> Magazine submitted by Amin Azoor.

Updated Reviews page - added Review by Sports Gaming Network UK plus brief details of Ultimate PC review.

Got an email from Jeremy Wellard the producer of Brian Lara Cricket

There is a brand new demo on the website which includes a direct 3d version and a software version....
The game is back with us complete with packaging and is being shipped around the country / world ready for the shops next Friday. The Lara version can actually be ordered through the site and will be sent out before the release date...

Keep encouraging people to add to the wishlist as we will be taking stock of the situation very soon.

The demo is actually the same filename as the previous one so the existing link works. Have updated description on the Downloads page accordingly. Stop Press - It has been reported that the demo does not work for everyone. As it is a large download you might want to wait until it works for everyone. If you live in the UK a larger demo (more commentary) appears on most PC games magazine coverdisks (April editions).

Updated Reviews page - added link to first online Review by GameSpot UK of PC version plus brief details of PC Zone's review.

Sunday, 7 March 1999

The official Codemasters Brian Lara page has been updated and is now taking pre-orders for £34.99. I am still hoping to be able to get a banner ad bettering that but nothing has materialised yet. The PC version is released on 19 March. This was reported on 28 February but some people seem to have missed this news as I received a lot of emails telling me the release date in the last week. Always better to get the news multiple times though rather than not at all.

Sunday, 28 February 1999

I recently sent the producer of Brian Lara Cricket the current Wish List. Here are some other newsworthy parts of his reply

The PC version left Codemasters for duplication and distribution a week ago today so will be in the shops on March 19th. We were able to make a few tweaks here and there over and above the PSX version as we were given a fair bit of extra time before Marketing wanted the game out. Thus, some of the points on the wish list have been included already.

We will be putting out updated teams complete with commentary names before the world cup. There will also be a team editor released, as I think I've already mentioned to you. I'll keep you informed with developments on these.

I was aware of the possibility of an editor and it is great to hear official confirmation of this.

Updated Links page.

Brian Lara Cricket was previewed in PC Gamer March issue and PC Zone March issue.

New Brian Lara Cricket demo (not sure if that is different or just more in sync with final release) will appear on PC Format March issue cover CD-ROM.

Sunday, 7 February 1999

New elease date is 19 March 1999. Hopefully this one will be the final one and not slip again.

Monday, 25 January 1999

Updated Reviews page - added link to Preview by GameSpot UK plus Review by Hotgames.

Jeremy Wellard the producer of Brian Lara Cricket emailed me a list of PC specifications which can be found on the Features page. In summary whilst the demo was 3Dfx only the final release will support other chipsets and a software only version for those without a 3D accelerator.

I have been successful in locating a company that will be able to take online orders for Brian Lara Cricket and export them to places like the US for a very reasonable price. Further details will be added in the next few days.

Sunday, 17 January 1999

Updated Links page - Brian Lara Cricket Zone seems to be no longer available.

Updated PC Demo Reviews page.

Monday, 11 January 1999

Well my worst fears were confirmed today with the depressing news that Brian Lara Cricket for the PC has been pushed back yet again. Right up until late yesterday the Codemasters web site said the release date was the 11th January. Checking the site today that has now been replaced by March 1999. Surely Codemasters could have updated the site sooner especially with the release date having been pushed back a whole 2 months.

Sunday, 10 January 1999

The game according to the Codemasters web site should be released for the PC tomorrow. I remain sceptical about this as all retailers I have spoken to still list sometime in February as the release date.

I am currently looking in to sponsorship of this site by a company who will be able to take online orders of Brian Lara Cricket and ship anywhere in the world. Hope to have more news soon.

Updated PC Demo Reviews page.

Thursday, New Years Eve 1998

At last the demo of Brian Lara Cricket has been released. Thanks to Sridhar Ramaswamy for letting me know. A link has been added on the Downloads page. The demo is 23 Mb in size and 3Dfx only. The demo has also been added to the CricketGames.com CD-ROM if you don't want to spend hours and risk losing the connection downloading it. Also added to Downloads four .AVI video files.

Added Demo Reviews page. If you have downloaded and played the demo please send me your feedback of it.

Tuesday, 22 December 1998

Unfortunately news of the demo seems to have been a bit premature as it has not yet materialised.

Added new Downloads page in hope that the demo will appear soon.

Friday, 18 December 1998

According to PC Cricket Zone the demo of Brian Lara Cricket will be released tomorrow. It will be over 30Mb in size (gulp!) and be the last 2 overs of a Limited Overs match between England and Australia at Lords.

Adjusted link for Brian Lara Cricket Online which is now part of PC Cricket Zone.

Saturday, 28 November 1998

Received an email from the producer of Brian Lara Cricket.

Some News Updates
The PC version is in testing and has a provisional date of 29th January. A demo will be available, marketing dept permitting, at the time of the PlayStation release.

Our own website is also soon being updated.

The new website is very good and the AVI files look very nice with 2 shots and 2 ground flybys. The screenshots are nicely organised into PC, Playstation and front end categories.

Got an email from the producer of Brian Lara Cricket with lots of news.

Release dates have now be confirmed and are

bulletPC version of Brian Lara Cricket is late January (UK)
bulletPC version of Shane Warne Cricket '99 is late January (Aus and NZ)

The Codemasters cricket website will be going live on the 25th Oct at about two thirds complete and will be under construction for a few weeks after that.

Here at CricketGames.com and also at PC Cricket Zone are some screenshots from PC and PlayStation versions and a movie.

A 3DFX demo will be posted on the Codemasters website on the 14th November. It will be added here as soon as possible and will hopefully be added to the CricketGames.com CD-ROM.

PC specifications have been confirmed

Minimum

bulletP166 with 3DFX card and 16MB RAM
bulletP200 without 3D and 16MB

Recommended

bulletP233 with 3DFX card, 32MB

There will be Direct 3D support for G200, Riva, Power VR, S3 and probably the Mystique.

Codemasters apologise for the delay saying, 'it has been because we are making this a truly awesome game. The wait WILL be worth it. We wouldn't want anybody to be disappointed.'

Whilst it is very disappointing that the PC version will not be released before Christmas it is more satisfying that Codemasters are not pushing out an early potentially buggy beta version just to get the Christmas market. The PSX version is ahead of the PC version due to the extra work needed to support the various PC 3D cards available. If you haven't got a 3D card yet make sure you ask Santa for one. Hopefully the demo released will keep us happy until the full version arrives.
